All about wedding cake consultation and what to expect

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A WEDDING CAKE CONSULTATION

So, you're engaged and in the midst of planning your dream wedding. One of the most exciting parts of the process is undoubtedly choosing your wedding cake. A wedding cake consultation is a crucial step in the cake selection process. It's a chance for you to meet with your cake designer, discuss your vision, and ensure that the final creation is a stunning centrepiece that reflects your personality and style. I do think your wedding cake is such an important part of your decorations, it is often beside the top table or in the centre of the dance floor, so it will naturally catch the eyes of a lot of your guests.

If you're wondering what to expect during a wedding cake consultation, I've got you covered! Here's a breakdown of what you can anticipate during this fun and exciting meeting.

1. PREPARATION IS KEY

Before your consultation, it's helpful to gather some inspiration for your wedding cake. In wedding cake consultations I do them all online via Zoom and have my couple fill in a pre-consultation form which is where they tell me more about their dream wedding cake. Browse through magazines, wedding websites, and social media platforms to create a collection of cake designs, flavours, and styles that catch your eye, that you think may go well with the vibe of your wedding. I find this so helpful as we go through each of the cakes I ask questions to find out what they really like about the cakes they have chosen.

2. TASTING THE SWEETNESS

The highlight of any wedding cake consultation is, undoubtedly, the cake tasting! This is the time to explore flavour combinations and find the perfect blend that will tantalize your taste buds. I offer wedding cake sample boxes that can be purchased online. Don't be afraid to ask questions or make suggestions. I as a cake designer will guide you through the process and help you make the best choices to suit your preferences and dietary needs.

3. DESIGNING THE DREAM

Once you've savoured the cake flavours, it's time to discuss the design and decoration of your wedding cake. Bring your inspirations, colour palettes, and any details related to your wedding theme. I as a cake designer will work closely with you to create a cake that not only complements your wedding style but also tells your unique love story. This is your chance to discuss the shape, tiers, decorations, and any personalised elements you'd like to incorporate.

4. SIZING AND SERVINGS

Determining the size of your wedding cake can be a daunting task. During the consultation, your cake designer will help you decide how much cake you'll need to accommodate your guest count. They'll consider factors such as the style of serving (dessert portions or finger portions), the chosen cake flavours, and any dietary restrictions. I do encourage my couple to cater for 70-80% of their guests with their wedding cake.

5. BUDGET CONSIDERATIONS

It's important to discuss the budget during the consultation to ensure that your cake designer can work within your financial parameters. Transparency is key in this regard. By letting your cake designer know your budget upfront, they can guide you in making decisions that meet your expectations while staying within the given constraints. This is something that I use to qualify my clients as if their budget matches the cost of my cakes then it will be a delight to move things forward.

6. THE SWEET AGREEMENT

At the end of the consultation, you'll have a clearer picture of your dream wedding cake. Your cake designer will provide you with a written agreement that includes all the discussed details – flavours, design, size, delivery, and cost. Take your time to review it carefully and ask any remaining questions before signing the agreement. This ensures that both parties are in complete understanding and ready to proceed.

Still need some help, here are 10 questions to ask on your wedding cake consultation:

  1. When will you deliver my wedding cakes, and how long do you need?

  2. What flowers are not food-safe and how do you prep flowers for your wedding cake?

  3. I have some vegan and gluten-free guests, how can we cater for them?

  4. Will it be you on the day that will be delivering the wedding cake, have you worked at this venue before?

  5. Do you have your food hygiene certification?

  6. Are you covered with public liability cover, if so how much?

  7. So what is your booking process?

  8. What is the deposit?

  9. Do you provide a cake stand and a cake knife?

  10. What happens if we want to change the design once we have paid the deposit?

Your wedding cake consultation is an opportunity to bring your cake dreams to life. It's a collaborative process where you and your cake designer work together to create a stunning centrepiece that will leave a lasting impression on your wedding day. By going into the consultation prepared and with an open mind, you'll be well on your way to enjoying a beautiful and delicious wedding cake that perfectly encapsulates your love and celebration. Happy cake planning!
